The reason I went natural was because my hair could no longer take the chemical process from relaxers. I had a really bad relaxer that left me with severe dermatitis and a fungus on my scalp. From that point forward I decided I would never relax my hair ever again. After I BC in June 2008 I had about 3 inches of hair and began trying different styles and products. My staple products to this day almost 3 years later is still Shea butter, aloe vera gel and Shea Moisture or Giovanni products. My usual styles are twists and updos and I definitely love rocking my curly fro. if you like to see more pics of my journey I'm at http://members.fotki.com/soontobenappy/about/ or you can find me on youtube http://www.youtube.com/user/NowIAmNappy?feature=mhum

I would like to thank this naturalysta for being my very first naturalysta feature for the month!!!: May 2011

this donna marie dream ccurling creme is amazing!

do u see how defined my curls are?

hair dictionary

aloe vera gel- the mucilage from the leaves of the aloe plant
aloe vera juice- the diluted form of aloe vera gel
afro- a natural hair texture that is round in shape.
cowash- washing hair with conditioner only
defined curls- curls that have their own individual curl patterzern.
moisturizer- a product with water as the first ingredient.
pre-poo- a pre shampoo method of applying conditioner, oils, and moisturizer to hair  and leaving it on   for 30min-hr. then shampooing hair.
sealant- first apply a moisturizer (water must be the first ingredient in the product), then apply the oil or hair butter of your choice. this seals the moisture in your hair.
shea butter- is a slightly yellowish or ivory-colored natural fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree by crushing, boiling and stirring.
shrinkage- what may happen to hair after the hair has dried. the length and texture have shrunken or gotten smaller.
sweet almond oil- main constituent is olein. obtained from sweet almonds that have been cleaned , and crushed.
wide tooth comb- an excellent comb for detangling hair that is kinky, curly, or coily. it is good because it does not tear the hair out

USE A SEALANT!!!

how to apply a sealant  and what it does
1 . apply your moisturizer...( a moisturizer is is a product with water as its first ingredient, such as aloe vera, or you can just use water.) oil is NOT a moisturizer!
2. apply your oil or butter of choice

why seal?
if you dont apply your moisturizer first and then seal it will have an opposite effect. DRYNESS

what are the benefits?

Sealing helps to lock in moisture, makes hair softer, prevents spit split ends, and  keeps hair moisturized, and helps retain length

Once i started to seal, then my hair was softer, healthier moisturized and hair began to GROW!!!! yeah!

What not to do to our hair

After three almost four years natural, i've learned through trial and error what not to do:

1. Don't use rubberbands. (unless you like a free hair cut, lol)
2. Don't use a blow dryer. ( causes dryness, breakage)( if you must use one use a diffuser instead)
3. Don't comb your hair while it's dry.( always moistuize while styling hair)
4. Don't go to sleep without wearing a satin/ silk scarf on your head.( keeps the oils and moisture in your hair)
 or use a satin pillowcase.
5. Don't go to sleep without putting you hair in (protective style) twists, conrows, etc.
6. Don't use a hard brush in your hair(It's best not to use one at all)
7. Don't use styling appliances too often( curling irons, pressing combs, etc).. causes breakage and split ends
8.Don't braid/ conrow your hair tightly.  Can damage your hair follicles.

Product ingredient info

What are good products?
I would say that is realtive to what YOUR hair likes. FOR ME... my hair does better WITHOUT sulfates, cones, parabens, petroleum, mineral oil . EVERYONE IS FREE TO CHOOSE WHAT WORKS BEST FOR THEIR HAIR......I'm just passing on knowledge.......

Sulfates- are  detergents that make shampoos, body washes and other cleansers clean and foam.
why not good for hair? It can strip your hair of any natural oils.

Parabens---- are chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Parabens are effective preservatives in many types of formulas. These compounds, and their salts, are used primarily for their bactericidal and fungicidal properies.

Petroleum and mineral oil ----both block the pores. may stunt hair growth and cause dryness and dandruff.

This is why ALL my hair care products are paraben, sulafate. mineral oil, petroleum and paraben FREE
